 CCCA Board News

Archival of CCCA Records: Ken Portier reported that he is halfway through digitizing the CCCA records from the last 10 years. Once digitized, these records will be transmitted to the UGA Library for permanent storage.

Community Affairs: Martha Davis and Ken Portier reported on meetings they attended in the last month related to Eastside Athens development. - Cedar Ridge Planned Development - 955 Gaines School Rd project - 1075 Gaines School Rd rezoning - 155 Whit Davis Rd rezoning - 1030 Barnett Shoals Rd (new library site) - Eastside Athens TSPLOST proposal The Cedar Ridge Planned Development proposed for the 7.4 acre empty site across from the Ponderosa Dr entrance did not receive approval to proceed by the County Commissioners. The developer cannot resubmit for a year. The Immediate Care Center planned for 955 Gaines School Rd (across from Johnny's Pizza and Dunkin' Donuts) was approved by the County Commissioner and demolition of the existing building should occur this summer. Votes on the rezoning for 1075 Gaines School Rd (across Green Acres Dr from Synovus) and for 155 Whit Davis Rd (behind the Dollar Store) were both postponed for 30 days pending clarifications by the developers. Commissioners were concerned that plans for the sites are vague and without binding conditions. The Commissioners approved rezoning 1030 Barnett Shoals Rd – the site of the new Eastside Library Branch – from RM-2 (multifamily) to G (government) to allow site preparation to begin. The Eastside Complete Streets TSPLOST proposal prepared with input from Cedar Creek residents had its initial review by the 2026 TSPLOST Citizen Review Committee and received very positive comments. Next steps not expected for months.

Landscaping and Beautification: This Committee was charged by the Board to develop plans to beautify the Cedar Springs Dr entrance which currently looks poorly due to the removal of cedar trees from the property adjacent to our sign.

Membership: The Board discussed requests from some members to be allowed to pay once for multiple years of membership. The Board agreed with the Treasurer that our current membership accounting system is not really capable of keeping track of multiple year memberships and of ensuring that fees paid for future memberships are spent in the correct years.

Ponderosa Drive entrance sign light

The County has provided us permission to proceed with the installation of a solar panel, battery box, controller and LED sign light. We have contracted to have a metal stand constructed for the panel and installed. This will hopefully be completed by the end of June. We will keep your posted.

Neighborhood Yard Sale

The Cedar Creek Civic Association (CCCA) is planning to hold their annual neighborhood yard sale on Saturday, June 28 from 8 AM to 1PM. As of June 6, only 4 homes were registered to participate. We need more participants to make this a true draw. Please sign up now.

There will be print and online advertising prior to the event and signs will go up on all four entrances to Cedar Creek. If you are interested in participating, click the button below and fill out the form. For questions - contact Susan Parish at sdp51@yahoo.com.

Registration is free to CCCA members. You can register by clicking the button below and filling out the form. We will be advertising the addresses of participants in our yard sale notices.

Cedar Creek residents who are not currently members of the CCCA will need to join if they would like their yard sale location listed in our advertisements of the event.  If you’re not a member then NOW is the time to join. Please consider joining the Association and participating in this neighborhood-wide event. The association dues help to cover the cost of lighting and landscaping at all four entrances to Cedar Creek, events such as the annual yard sale, Fall Festival, maintenance of 13 groomed natural areas in Cedar Creek, representation in East Athens development discussions, and advocating for Cedar Creek with local government agencies.

Cedar Creek Swimming Pool

We continue to see confusion between membership in the CCCA and membership in the Cedar Creek Swimming Pool. These are two separate entities, and membership in CCCA offers no rights to pool services.  Pool membership is open to anyone in the community- not just Cedar Creek residents. The pool contains saltwater and is chlorinated. It stays warm all season and there are plenty of sunny and shaded spaces for members to relax. The pool season runs from May 3 to Sept 21. Go to https://sites.google.com/site/cedarcreekpool/membership-information for information on how to join.

Stay Sun-safe Every Day

With all the recent rain, it seems the sun will never come out. Rest assured, it will, and with it comes the dangers of overexposure. Remember it is critically important to stay safe and avoid too much sun exposure. Check out these tips from the American Cancer Society on how to protect your skin while enjoying the sunshine.

Your Vote Counts.png

Public Service Commissioners Election

The Public Service Commission is a group of five elected officials who oversee and regulate public utilities in Georgia, including Georgia Power, electric cooperatives, natural gas providers and the telecommunications industry (phone and internet). They decide on the state’s energy policy, including how much renewable energy to build and the rates companies charge for the services they provide to consumers.  Because of  unusual rules set by the State Legislature, Athens voters have the opportunity to choose commissioners for both Districts 2 and 3.

Primary voting for candidates for the Public Service Commission is occurring now. In District 2, the vote is for a Republican candidate who will face Democrat challenger Alicia Johnson in an election in November.  In District 3, the vote is for a Democratic candidate to face incumbent Republican Fitz Johnson in November.  Athens Politics Nerd gives a detailed overview of the candidates.

This election impacts you - so plan to vote in this primary. Election Day voting on Tuesday, June 17 is at your regular polling place, 7 AM to 7 PM.  Early voting has started - you can vote now through June 17 at the ACC Elections Office, 155 Washington St and after June 7 at the ACC Main Library, 2025 Baxter St, from 8 AM to 5 PM except on Sunday.
